I grew up in rural Gloucestershire. The house was a centuries old cottage that was (for many years) covered in ivy.
My bedroom window was completely surrounded by leaves, which were home to lots of little birds in the summer.
The constant battle between the ivy and the house (the natural and the man-made) has stayed with me. Roots digging into the walls, and the constant work required to keep it in check.
The ivy is now long gone, but that battle still fascinates me. Sometimes we put up a good fight, with a climbing rose trained carefully over an iron pergola. But in the end, nature will always win.
