This ongoing project started when I joined the Bristol & District Lapidary Society.
A passionate community of keen rockhounds and masters of the stone cutting art, with an intimate knowledge of our local geology.
Through them I learned that the beaches, quarries, and fields of the Bristol region conceal extraordinary material - quartz, agate, fossils, stromatolites, and minerals found almost nowhere else on Earth.
The pieces in this collection span hundreds of millions of years of geological history - from Triassic lakeshores to Jurassic reefs - all of it within a couple of hours travel from Bristol.
These are not exotic imported gemstones. They are the rocks and minerals of our own ground, asking only to be noticed.
The lapidary society faces an uncertain future due to ageing equipment & rising costs. There is a fundraising appeal currently running:
