In 1979, artist Kit Williams published a picture book containing 15 original oil paintings that concealed clues to the location of an 18ct jewelled hare, buried somewhere in Britain.
The book sparked a worldwide treasure hunt and the hare was found in 1982. It was sold to an anonymous buyer in 1988 and has remained hidden ever since, apart from 2 brief appearances in 2009 & 2012. I was just a toddler at the time, so only found out about the story recently. I was entranced by the beauty & workmanship of the golden hare (which is particularly impressive as Williams is not a trained jeweller). When I learned that the hare was due to make a rare appearance, thanks to QI elf, Dan Schreiber, I started making my own tribute to the original piece. Mine is hand pierced in sterling silver with labradorite, smokey quartz & black spinel. It generated a lot of interest on social media and I decided to auction it off in aid of NHS Charities Together Covid-19 Urgent Appeal. |
