Fine Jewellery Techniques (JEW4035)
13/02/2018 - Spinner Ring
Inspired by my trip to the museum and really keen to make something kinetic, I started with two very simple ideas.
Probably the most common item of kinetic jewellery these days is the spinner ring. A wide band that is flared out at each end to contain one or more thin rings that are free to move.
For this one, I used one of my trusty wire dies to make a thin patterned ring over a plain silver band.

Rolling Ball Ring
I happen to have a few undrilled industrial ruby balls lying around at home (as you do).
I made a long cage for the balls, from two rings of wire that I stretched out to form long “paperclip” shapes. I then cut open one of them and soldered it perpendicularly to the other. I then made a ring, cut that open and soldered the cage in place. After polishing, the balls could be very easily pushed into the cage. |
