08/02/2018 - Wax Carving Tool

Today we’re making our own wax carving tool from steel.
One end will be wide and flat and the other curved and pointed. We started by hot forging one end to flatten it out. |

We then used the linisher to shape this into a knife shape of our choosing.
The other end was sharpened off with the linisher. |

A bench grinder with an old rounded grinding stone was then used to put a concave face in the pointed end and to create narrow necks at each end. This is to reduce the amount of heat that travels down the tool to the users fingers.
Both ends could then be cleaned up with an Artiflex disk on the polishing motor. |

Also, to stop our tools going missing, we filed down a flat section in the middle, and wrote our names with a percussion engraver.

Finally I gave the tool a quick polish to make it nice and smooth.
