I knew that getting the pins perfectly straight, was going to be crucial, so I built a rudimentary drill press out of Meccano for my pendant motor.
It's not great, but I think it helped.

Realising that cutting 108 lengths of wire was going to be tedious, I cut 54 and bent them.
This was also useful to add some stability whilst soldering.
As it turned out, my soldering was not great and over the course of construction , I had to resolder a lot of pins that fell out.

I had decided to have a lantern gear for all 3 of the pieces I planned. However, whilst playing, I wondered if a round cage might work just as well.
I decided to construct one for the ring, which was going to look a bit cumbersome with a large lantern gear.
The picture above shows the first stage of construction. It worked wonderfully.
