BATF Goblet - summer holiday 2018
The British Allied Trades Federation, Goblet Design Competition
"The British Allied Trades Federation (BATF) is sponsoring the design and manufacture of a unique silver goblet, to be presented to their President, Kate Owen, in June 2019.
The competition
• The competition is open to students at the School of Jewellery, BCU
• The budget for the design and manufacture of the goblet is £1200- £1500 with a design fee of £250 to be paid to the selected designer.
• The design should be capable of replication (i.e. two goblets of the same design, overall budget £3,000). The principal goblet will be held in the silver collection of the BATF, however an identical goblet may be commissioned and this would be retained by the President at the end of office. Such a commission would be at the request of the outgoing President and costs would be met at their expense.
• The BATF will retain the CAD renders/drawings of the winning designs for their archive. The winning student will assist BATF by providing a short bio etc. for publicity purposes.
• The winning student will liaise with the BATF/SoJ’s chosen manufacturer for the manufacture of the goblet(s).
• The current BATF President will be a member of the judging panel, which will meet in October.
• The deadline for entries is Monday 24th September at midday. Named and professionally presented entries, supported by a statement explaining the design, should be submitted to the School Office.
The Design Brief
• The goblet should be between 17cm and 22 cm high.
• The goblet should be sterling silver with a minimum/approximate weight of 220 grams, to reflect those currently in the collection.
• The goblet will be used as a wine goblet at formal dinners of the BATF and so must function as such.
• The design must incorporate the BATF crest and be engraved with the president’s name and years of office. (Details will be provided) Engraving costs are to be included in the overall budget.
• The silver may be gilded, as deemed fit by the designer. (Gilding costs to be included in the overall budget)
• The goblet may be made by the student, if the tutor and student believe that the student has the necessary skills.
• The goblet can be marked with the student’s hallmark.
• The goblet must be of good professional quality.
• It is hoped that each goblet will reflect the time of its manufacture, so as the collection grows, there will be distinguished differences visible, referencing the styles of the day.
The Recipient’s Details
The President - Kate Owen
• Has worked for 40 years in giftware – buying, designing products and importing from Asia.
• Third Lady Chairman of the Giftware Association in its 70 year history.
• Third Lady President of the British Allied Trade Federation in its 100+ yr history.
• Loves gardens & gardening, but is definitely not floral; more a shrub, tree & topiary person who enjoys architectural gardens.
• Enjoys travelling.
• Love Deco, Chrysler Building, Woolworth, Cuban architecture.
• Loves 30’s Scandinavian design
• Dislikes Brutalist design and just cannot love the Barbican!
• Enjoys Nouveau and Arts & Crafts, particularly Arts & Crafts houses for their rambling beauty.
Aside from her Biography and interests listed above, Kate would very much rather see a ‘design of today’ and not influence the designer with her tastes and interests! "

Initial research into ecclesiastical chalices and arts & crafts forms at The Wilson museum in Cheltenham.
My initial idea was to base the goblet design on waterlilies.
I then came up with the idea of imitating the naturalistic forms of art nouveau glass using a fold-forming type of hammering.
