08/05/2018 -Finished Medal
The problem with having carved the two sides of my medal separately, is how do I put them together?
I tried melting the reverse of both and joining them together, but they only fused in the middle, like an Oreo, so I had to saw them apart again and rethink. I have been meaning to get some red Mold-a-Wax for some time, and this was the perfect excuse. It is a soft wax for casting, that is malleable in the hand and becomes very sticky in hot water. I got a big lump nice and soft, then spread it thinly over the back of one half of the medal. I used hot water to get it really squishy, and pushed the two halves together. This did work, but I feared that the edge would be damaged due to the softness of the red wax. I ended up shoving offcut pieces of the harder blue wax into the red wax. Not pretty but it should work. |
In hindsight, my medal design is more of a three sided story than two.
“Why spending money on space exploration when people live in poverty on this planet? But, unless we take care of this planet, we will have to move to another one."
I'm happy with the finished carving and have enjoyed the process, however it was VERY time consuming.
I mainly used wood carving tools, as these shifted a lot of material. I also used a meths lamp and solder probe for repairs. As expected, just like our first attempt at wax carving back in the first term I didn't find the traditional tool we made to be of much use.
