The wax disks we were given were thinner than I was hoping for, so I'm going to carve the front & back separately, then fuse them together. This also means that I don't run the risk of ruining the whole piece if I muck up the second side.
So I started with my mars design for the front. I rounded off the sides, to give a slight domed effect, then drew the "canals" on with Sharpie. The carving went well and I was about 80% done by end of day.
