GCDC NAJ Chair's Pin
Design Sections 2D, #5 NAJ Chair's Pin - Past & Future
"The National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) and its parent company, The British Allied Trades Federation, are seeking to create a unique unisex design for the NAJ Chair to wear at formal events and engagements on behalf of the Association. Attached to a dress or jacket lapel, this jewel will be an important emblem and also establish NAJ’s first contemporary design for its recently formed association.
The competition brief is to design an innovative unisex Chair’s Pin entitled ‘Past & Future’, for wearing at day time and evening events when representing the NAJ. The pin will also need to incorporate a facility to hang the jewel by a ribbon as a pendant or necklet.
You are encouraged to be as creative as possible but your proposal must include some form of symbolic representation or correlation to the origins of the NAJ, its logo for instance or a stylised version of this. Please look at the NAJ website for more details about this exciting opportunity at http://www.naj.co.uk The Association has a membership of some 2,000 retailers, designers and suppliers nationwide.
It is to be made in any one or a combination of Fairtrade precious metals, and can incorporate natural gemstones, enamel and/or any decorative surface treatment to enhance and capture the essence and official position of the NAJ Chair.
Following the GC&DC Awards evening the winning designer will liaise with NAJ to oversee the production of their design. This will be undertaken by Fattorini with Fairtrade precious metals and small gems supplied from NAJ’s membership. The finished jewel will be presented to the Association and its current Chair. It is to be delivered to Federation House in Birmingham before its AGM on11 June, 2019.
The winner will be announced to industry press, across the NAJ’s online platforms, and an editorial feature in the September issue of The Jeweller magazine will highlight the workmanship of the piece."

Initial mock-ups in photoshop and Rhino.
Final presentation board. I chose a patterned paper to mount the render on because I thought it echoed the scroll work on the original NAJ crest.
