26/09/2018 - Goldsmiths' Fair
Exciting school trip today. We're off to Goldsmiths' Fair in London. Although I've been to Goldsmiths' Hall, I've never been to this event.
Everyone else is going down by coach from Brum. However it's quicker and easier for me if I go straight there. I drove to Slough and then got the train into town.

Of all places, I had a brainwave on the tube.
Instead of the contra-rotating gears sitting on top of the ring, can the finger go THROUGH the gears? I think this would have to be like a traditional spinner ring, with a wide internal ring and the moving parts on the outside. |
At the fair I visited our old AiR, Stephanie Holt who had a stand. Also Zoe Watts, a silversmith who I discovered lives & works just down the road from me, and who I visited over the summer.
But the highlight was talking to Vicki Ambrey-Smith, who I studied during our silversmithing module, as she makes the most beautiful architectural jewellery. I was a real fan-girl at her, poor thing. |
Goldsmiths' Hall is of course fabulous and when I'd finished browsing, I popped along the road to see the Guildhall with it's beautiful gothic facade.
With a couple of hours to kill, I went over to the Sir John Soane's Museum at Lincoln's Fields. It's been on my list of places to visit in London, for ages.
A bit of a disappointment. Very dark and cramped, loads and loads of classical plasters. The building itself is fascinating, and low and behold, in the gift shop; Vicki Ambrey-Smith cufflinks.
