25/09/2018 - Initial Design Ideas
My initial ideas for this design are quite literal. How can I get the design and movement of a maypole dance into a piece of jewellery?
Although in reality, maypole ribbons are held taut and are therefore straight, I am attracted to the wavy patterns often used in drawings and paintings of maypoles.
Obviously the central pole couldn't be too high as the ring would become a deadly weapon.
An idea occurred to me, which I had to try out with my trusty Meccano (I've spent the summer buying old Meccano gears off Ebay with the intention of casting it in silver).
If two contrate gears and a pinion are arranged as shown, they rotate in opposite directions. Just like one of the maypole dances we used to do at primary school.
The design I came up with actually shows bevel gears, but the action would be the same.
The next problem is where to put the stones. They would have to be asymmetrical and I quite like the idea of the main stone being mounted in an unusual direction.
