22/04/2018 - The Moon is Made of Cheese
Having constructed the main “cup” on Friday, and soldered the “moon” bezel in place, I tried the mechanism in situ for the first time.
Disaster, it doesn't fit! The moon sticks out too far. In the back of my head, I think I knew this might happen all along. I thought about using a 2mm tube set stone, like I'm using for my Production Processes bracelet . But that’s too big as well. I think my only option now, is granulation, a small silver blob instead of a stone. It's a shame because I don't think it will stand out enough against all the acres of other silver. But… I could use gold! Just a teeny tiny bit. That would make the moon special again (although not strictly accurate in terms of colour unless you believe the moon to be made of cheese). So I melted down a few tiny bits of gold scrap I had at home, and picked the best. I soldered it in place on the cog and had to give it a quick polish just to see how it looked. Lovely. |
