07/01/2018 Wooden Base
The one thing I managed to get done over the christmas holiday was a wooden base for my towers.
I found a wood recycling yard in Castle Coombe (frequently voted most picturesque village in England and often used as a filming location). I dug around in their hardwood and came away with some mahogany, oak, and a couple of other unidentified species. |
I decided on a piece of mahogany for my base as it has a lovely red colour that would match the copper. I sanded it all down to a smooth finish and treated it with teak oil.
I knew I wanted to put a Tolkien-eque map on the base and I initially had grand ideas involving inlayed abalone and mother of pearl. However as I started carving, it became obvious that this was all that would be required and was much better to be subtle so as not to distract from the towers.
