I finally found the bobbing flower I'd seen ages ago on Facebook:
It's by Grainne Reynolds and uses a cam mechanism rather than the wire that I thought I'd remembered. The flower spins and bobs up & down as the handle is turned. At the other end of the scale, is the famous Silver Swan at The Bowes Museum. An absolute masterpiece of the 18th century. |

Whilst browsing the internet for more automata ideas, I came across Rob Ives, who makes downloadable patterns for simple paper automata. I especially like those powered by clothes pegs and reckon they could be easily adapted for metal. A project for the summer holidays perhaps...
