Fine Jewellery Techniques (JEW4035)

04/05/2018 - Final Build 4

Having made the ring part of my design last week, I decided it was too big, so I cut it down and resoldered it.
This week I could finally reshape it with a grooved ring mandrel which kept the cut out part straight (I had to buy one of these as I couldn't find the school's).

I was also unhappy with my cut out abalone so I ordered a thicker piece which was much easier to cut.
The thicker abalone and need to create the cross shaped “petals” at the top, meant that I needed to replaced the central tube with a longer piece.

When I was experimenting, I found it very hard to cut down such a small diameter tube straight.  So I found some slightly larger tube and cut down this very carefully. I could then place this round the smaller tube and use it as a guide.
