17/02/2018 - Weston-Super-Mare Trip
A really interesting derelict structure that is local (ish) to me, is Birnbeck Pier in Weston Super Mare.
Weston had a new Grand Pier built in 2010 after the original burnt down.
However just up the seafront is another pier that has been left to rot and gradually fall into the sea.
It consists of two stretches, one from the mainland to a small rocky island, and the other out from the island.
A small visitor centre is manned by volunteers, one of whom told me that pleasure boats from Cardiff would dock at the pier and the passengers would spend the whole day there, never setting foot on the mainland.
Early photographs show a huge water slide and lifeboat station.
People have gone onto the pier to take photographs inside the buildings, but it is quite clear to me that doing so is extremely dangerous.

These patterns are fascinating (called Tafoni, they are formed when tiny pebbles get trapped in cavities in the rock).
