Using an Insert as a Decorative Feature

4/10/2017

Excited by the first new technique I'd learned, I had the idea to use a different coloured metal for the insert in order to make it a design feature.  Thinking of what else I could do to “mix things up” I also thought I’d try to put the V shaped notches in vertically to make an attractive lozenge shape.
I had a silver D-shaped court ring on the go at home (that wasn't working out) so I chose this for the main ring and copper for the insert.

Due to multiple resolders, the copper insert kept shifting and I ended up over filing it and making that part of the ring too thin.
I made up for this with a small band of silver placed on the inside.
This actually served a second purpose as a barrier, allowing the ring to be worn without causing skin discolouration.

I love the result.  As the band is all one shape it's quite subtle and you have to look closely to see the detail.
